Overview

A key anchor attraction of the Hunter, Maitland Gaol has a vibrant history spanning more than 150 years. After housing some of Australia's most hardened and notorious criminals, Maitland Gaol closed in 1998.

Unlock the adventure as you serve a small amount of time learning about the facility, past prisoners and daring escapes.

Maitland Gaol offers visitors a range of exciting experiences, with themed guided tours during the day, as well as torchlight tours by night. Explore the site at your own pace with a self guided audio tour or if you???re feeling brave, Ghost Hunting 101 nights are the perfect next level experience.

The Gaol is also available as a destination for special events.

Visit the gaol seven days a week between 9.00am and 4.00pm weekdays and 10.00am and 4.00pm the weekends.

From Newcastle and Lake Macquarie drive west along the New England Highway following the signs to Maitland and Singleton. After 30 - 40 minutes you will arrive in East Maitland. At East Maitland take the Morpeth turn-off at Melbourne Street. Drive for 1km along Melbourne Street. After you drive under the railway line turn right at the round-a-bout into John Street. Maitland Gaol is located on top of the hill.
