Overview
A key anchor attraction of the Hunter, Maitland Gaol has a vibrant history spanning more than 150 years. After housing some of Australia's most hardened and notorious criminals, Maitland Gaol closed in 1998.

The Gaol is also available as a destination for special events.
Visit the gaol seven days a week between 9.00am and 4.00pm weekdays and 10.00am and 4.00pm the weekends.

Location & Directions
From Newcastle and Lake Macquarie drive west along the New England Highway following the signs to Maitland and Singleton. After 30 - 40 minutes you will arrive in East Maitland. At East Maitland take the Morpeth turn-off at Melbourne Street. Drive for 1km along Melbourne Street. After you drive under the railway line turn right at the round-a-bout into John Street. Maitland Gaol is located on top of the hill.
