SONIDO Andean & Latin American Roots

Overview

Sonido is one of Australia's longest-lived and most renowned exponents of Latin American folkloric music. Playing a repertoire of original songs made in Australia, their multi-instrumentalist line up entrances audiences with the magic of the sounds of Latin America.

Formed in 1977 playing traditional Andean music, with instruments like the charango and zampoña, a new generation of musicians took the mantle in the 1990s, injecting broader and more modern influences, whilst staying true to their roots of Latin American traditional sounds. Featuring over 40 instruments, their concerts journey through the South American Andes (charangos and panpipes) through to the Caribbean with the infectious rhythms of congas, bass and piano.

To these traditional sounds they bring a unique spin that comes from being born and raised in Sydney, influenced by the music of their home, as well as the poetry, sounds and rhythms of their heritage. It is traditional music of a place on no map, a folklore in search of a country.
