The Hunter Wetlands, a non-profit community owned organisation, raises all its own funds and relies solely on grants, sponsorship and an enormously committed band of volunteers to operate. Recently the Newcastle City Council unveiled their draft budget for 2009/2010 and with it a withdrawal of $10 000 of much needed funding for the Hunter Wetlands Centre at Shortland. Funds like these are critical because they contribute to the administration costs for the centre and rarely is funding for administration covered in project grants.
